Slipbarinn in Reykjavik is without a doubt the best bar in the country. My friend Alana is one of the head bartenders there now.
I also highly recommend going to Snaefelness and considering a trip to the Westfjords, though it may take up several days. Also Dad, you might be interested in the Vestmannaeyjar Islands - active volcanoes are continually destroying and creating new islands.

We rented a 4*4. We didn't go on any F roads and as far as I remember you're not allowed on the gravel roads. There is one main highway which goes around the entire country and most of the sites to see are along that highway or just a little bit off.
This is the itinerary that we followed.
Day 1 Reykjavik,
Day 2 golden circle (strokkur, gulfoss), skogafoss, skeljalandfoss,
Day 3 vik, plane crash site, vatnajokull national park, fjallsalorn glacier lagoon,
Day 4 stoksness, godafoss, Dettifoss, selfoss, drive to lake myvatn,
Day 5 lake myvatn area- see crater and some volcanic sites
Day 6 back to Reykjavik. We did the blue lagoon on the last night. ictures
